Dr. David J. Carter is in his 17th year in education, and this will mark his fourth year as a proud member of the Lake Forest High School administrative team. Prior to his current role as Assistant Principal at LFHS, Dr. Carter was a teacher, coach, assistant principal, and Principal at Milford High School.
Dr. Carter attributes his life’s success to his faith, family, and hard work. Upon graduation from high school, he attended Delaware State University where he continued his education and football careers as a Hornet. During his teaching and administrative career, he returned to his Alma Mater two additional times and earned his Masters and Doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership.
In November of 2014, Dr. Carter was inducted into his High School Hall of Fame for his professional excellence and community service. He was one of the youngest candidates to receive such an accomplishment at the age of 34.
From 2002 – 2009, Dr. Carter who was then known as Coach Carter, was a member of the Milford High Football Coaching staff, where he served as Defensive line, Wide receiver, Special Teams, and Strength and Conditioning coach. In 2008, they won Milford’s only football state championship and in 2007 and 2009 he was selected as a member of the Gold Squad All-Star Football coaching staff. In September of 2018, Dr. Carter will be inducted into the Milford High School Football Hall of Fame for coaching the team to win its only football state championship title in the school’s history. In addition to football, Coach Carter created a performance-training program with a local physical therapy company and trained athletes ranging from Middle School sports all the way up to professional baseball and Olympic Field hockey players for over ten years. He still occasionally works with college athletes and football players preparing for their NFL pro-day tryouts and combines.
Dr. Carter has served as an Adjunct professor at DSU where he teaches masters and doctoral level classes and has currently served on over five successful doctoral dissertation committees for students pursuing and earning their doctoral degrees in Educational Leadership. Dr. Carter has recently joined the M.Ed. and Ed.D. Delaware State University Advanced Programs Advisory Committee.
Throughout his professional career, Dr. Carter has had an opportunity to share his message of perseverance, overcoming odds, and achieving goals with people of all ages. Dr. Carter has been a motivational speaker for the Dover Air force base Wingman day, Anti-bullying for local elementary schools, motivational messages for students state testing, guest speaker at Wesley College for domestic violence awareness, and a motivational speaker for several local high school sports teams.
Dr. Carter currently resides in Delaware with his beautiful wife, daughter, and dog-named Lucy.
Dr. Carter attests that throughout life he has always strived to be honest, fair, and consistent as he feels strongly that these are qualities that we must possess to be successful. He believes in discipline, dedication, determination, learning from teachable moments, and giving his best effort in all that he does. As an educator, mentor, coach, and currently administrator, he shares that he will continue to challenge himself and others to be successful.
